Define what the distributor must actually do
Distributor searches often begin too broadly. Before collecting names, decide what the partner must actually do: hold stock, sell to dealers, cover a territory, provide technical support, install equipment, manage returns, market the category, or simply introduce accounts. The answer changes who belongs on the list.
The product also needs a commercial brief: target customer, landed cost, expected distributor margin, recommended selling price, minimum order, lead time, warranty responsibility, samples, and the support available from South Africa.
Build a qualified longlist
Useful sources include trade associations, exhibitor lists, manufacturer partner directories, specialist publications, buyer conversations, competitor channels, and companies already selling complementary lines. Search by customer and application, not only by the word 'distributor'.
- Customer and territory fit
- Complementary products and possible conflicts
- Sales team, technical ability, warehouse footprint, and service capacity
- Evidence of active market presence and reachable decision-makers
Qualify before discussing exclusivity
A good website doesn't prove performance. Ask how the distributor would position the product, which accounts they would approach, what stock they expect, how they report activity, and what support they need. Verify the business and speak with the people who would actually handle the line.
Exclusivity should follow evidence, not enthusiasm. If exclusivity is considered, it should be tied to a defined territory, term, performance expectations, reporting, customer ownership, termination, inventory, and post-termination arrangements reviewed by qualified legal counsel.
Run a measured partner process
Give each candidate the same core information and ask the same main questions. That makes comparison possible. Record what was confirmed, what remains an assertion, and what the South African team would need to change. A small pilot or non-exclusive start often reveals more than an ambitious early promise.
